European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)
European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is a student oriented credit system based on the workload of the student. It is a value that represents all the studies (theoretical courses, applications, seminars, independent studies, examinations, assignments, etc.) that a student needs to complete in order to be successful in a course. The system that was solely a credit transfer system has developed into a credit accumulation system to be implemented at institutional, regional, national and European level.
Why should ECTS be used?
ECTS, which is developed by the European Union in order to enable student mobility and make it easier for the education that the students received abroad to be recognized academically in their own countries, helps the higher education institutions to prepare program curricula and it enables programs to be compared more easily at national and international level and therefore making European Higher Education more attractive among other continents.
ECTS is one of the most important fields of study in the application phase of Bologna Process in Turkey. In recent years, many universities in Turkey intensified their studies for adjusting their credit and grading systems to ECTS principles. Within this scope, institutional ECTS coordinators and separate departmental ECTS coordinators for each faculty/ department are assigned to be responsible from both the application of ECTS in the universities and informing students about ECTS.
Due to the successful implementation of European Credit Transfer System and the Bologna Process, İzmir University of Economics was awarded with European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) Label by European Commission in 2011.
