Example model for earthquake-resistant building
A team of 5 students from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) made it to the finals of the Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition organized by the Natural Disaster Insurance Institution (DASK). As required by the competition format, the young team designed a 30-story hotel named ‘Marsyas’ to be constructed in the Dinar district of Afyonkarahisar. They became one of the 21 teams across Turkey to reach the finals. The competition, aimed at increasing students' awareness of earthquakes and enhancing their earthquake-resistant building design skills, will hold its final round in Istanbul on May 14-16, 2025.
‘Turkish Design’ became a book in Europe
Academics from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Fine Arts and Design have compiled the latest developments and current trends in design studies in Turkey into a new book. Published in English by a Dutch publishing house, the book titled, ‘Localizing Design Studies: Perspectives on Turkey’, is also available as an open-access digital publication. The book includes various fields such as fashion, interior architecture, biodesign, Turkish cinema, and stage design within the scope of IUE Graduate School Design Studies Program, highlighting the changes in design over the years.
Will study ‘economics’ at a 612-year-old university
Doğu Çeteci, a student at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Department of International Trade and Finance, has been accepted for a master’s degree at Scotland’s University of St Andrews, which is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world. Çeteci will study ‘economics’ at St Andrews, which stands out with its 612-year history and is a dream destination for thousands of successful young people worldwide. He will stay in Scotland for a year, starting this summer, where he will gain new knowledge, expand his network, and create new career opportunities for himself. Preparing to graduate from IUE Faculty of Business, Department of International Trade and Finance, 23-year-old Çeteci said he was excited to achieve his goal of studying abroad.
Salvador Dali inspires fashion
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Textile and Fashion Design Student Melek Nur Yüksel, student at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Department of Textile and Fashion Design won third place in the Junioshow Baby and Children's Clothing Young Designers Competition with a special collection she designed for boys aged 3-4. Inspired by the famous painter Salvador Dalí, her collection, titled ‘Dali Beach’, earned her a prize of 15 thousand TL and the right to apply for a scholarship abroad.
‘Game’ marathon
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Vocational School organized the ‘Gameathon 4.0’ event to increase high school students' interest in the rapidly growing gaming industry. A total of 72 students from high schools in Izmir worked for 24 hours to design the best game. Highlighting the importance of time, the event was held with the theme ‘One More Second’, and 17 games were developed. The young participants created games in various genres such as adventure, strategy, sports, and action and competed fiercely in a contest at the end of the event to claim first place. Their projects received high praise from the jury members, who work in different gaming companies.
Heart-warming surprise from IUE
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts surprised young children in Bayır Primary School in Mardin's Derik District. Responding warmly to the children's message, ‘We are curious about Aegean flavors’, sent through their teacher, IUE students prepared fig and walnut cookies and olive and tulum cheese snacks. They carefully packaged these treats and sent them off to Mardin. The children, over 1,500 kilometers away, were filled with joy when they received the gifts from the university students, eagerly opened the packages, and sent back plenty of photos to express their gratitude.
IUE Receives 3 Million TL ‘TUBITAK’ Funding
Focusing on disaster technologies, artificial intelligence, gastronomy, fashion, and creative industries to contribute to Turkey’s development, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) has received great news from TUBITAK. IUE, which prepared a special project featuring strategic steps to transform scientific studies into economic value, has been awarded a grant of approximately 3 million TL.
Started to protect herself, became a champion
Hatice Pınar Yiğitalp, a student at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), has risen to the national taekwondo team in a journey that began at age 7, encouraged by her family's belief that ‘she’ll learn to protect herself’. She has already achieved 9 national championships in her career. Most recently, she won a gold medal in the 62 kg category at the Turkish Senior Taekwondo Championships held in Ankara on January 8-12, and she has set her sights on becoming the world champion at the World Championships in China this October.
‘Sustainable’ collection by young designers
Students from Department of Textile and Fashion Design at Izmir University of Economics (IUE) breathed new life into discarded denim fabrics to create a special collection themed around “sustainability.” Utilizing defective and surplus stock products from the Lee and Wrangler brands under the Karma Marka Retail Group, the young designers garnered significant acclaim with their innovative and contemporary designs consisting of 10 unique pieces. The students set an example by raising awareness about preventing fabric waste in the fashion industry.
They brought cultural heritage into ‘fashion’
Turkey’s world-renowned cultural treasures, such as Hagia Sophia, Ancient City of Ephesus, Pergamon, and Troy, Göbeklitepe, Hattusa, Cappadocia, Mardin-Mor Gabriel, Mount Nemrut, and Zeugma, have inspired fashion. Senior students from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Textile and Fashion Design prepared a special collection of elegant garments inspired by the country’s historical sites as part of the project titled “Fashion in the Footsteps of Cultural Heritage.” Iranian students studying at IUE also contributed by working on archaeological sites from their culture, such as Persepolis and Tepe Sialk.
