International Success with ‘Octopresso’
Irmak Koluman, a student from Department of Industrial Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), has been awarded at the international design competition C-IDEA Design Award with her espresso machine named ‘Octopresso’, designed for coffee enthusiasts. Koluman’s design, which features a flat base and offers users the opportunity to achieve different flavors with each brew, garnered significant praise, outshining many ambitious projects in the ‘industrial design’ category.
Third-year student Irmak Koluman prepared her design, named ‘Octopresso,’ during her second year after approximately three months of work.
STAINLESS STEEL EXTERIOR
Using stainless steel for the exterior of Octopresso, Koluman opted for glass in the machine’s water tank. With her eye-catching design, she made a significant impact in the competition organized by the C-IDEA International Association of Educators, bringing the ‘design award’ to Turkey. IUE student Irmak received support during her project from Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Sayar and lecturers Murat Arikut, Özgür Deniz Çetin, Raul Pinto, and Tolga Okan.
EXTRA MOTIVATION
Expressing that she was very happy to receive the award, Koluman noted that this success would provide her with extra motivation for her future projects. Giving detailed information about her design, Koluman said, “Octopresso has a mechanism that works with a piston and a gear connected to it. The arms attached to the piston provide pressure. When the piston starts to deliver water to other compartments, it merges with the bottom filter and comes into contact with the pre-placed espresso coffee. Then, the coffee is prepared in a short time. This machine has the capacity to prepare a ‘double shot’ espresso in a single operation.”
I WANTED IT TO BE APPRECIATED AND TO AROUSE CURIOSITY
Koluman continued: “While preparing the design, I started with the idea that a coffee machine could be a stylish object that can be placed in a visible spot at home or the office. I wanted Octopresso to have rounded lines. I aimed for those who see the machine to be especially aesthetically impressed and feel a sense of curiosity. I can say that I succeeded in this. I thank my professors who trusted and supported me. Winning an award is a wonderful feeling.”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Can Özcan, Head of Department of Industrial Design, emphasized that Irmak deserved the award with this special design and congratulated her.
