Quality education, certified success
The success of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) stood out in the ‘2024 University Impact Rankings’ announced by the UK-based evaluation organization Times Higher Education (THE). Being ranked in 101-200 in the ‘quality education’ category among 2 thousand 152 universities from 125 countries, IUE surpassed many globally renowned universities. Izmir University of Economics achieved a significant success by ranking second among foundation universities in Turkey in the field of quality education.
Constantly improving the physical, social, and technological opportunities offered to its students, strengthening its academic staff, and updating its educational content according to contemporary needs, IUE has reaped the benefits of its strategic steps in recent years by making it to the worldwide list.
Times Higher Education, which evaluates university performance based on the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, announced the 2024 ‘Impact Rankings’ after a comprehensive assessment. In the list including 91 universities from Turkey, IUE proved its success in seven categories. Izmir University of Economics was ranked between 101-200 in the ‘quality education’ category, 201-300 in both ‘reducing inequalities’ and ‘no poverty’ categories based on the University's social work, 301-400 in the ‘climate action’ category, 401-600 in ‘sustainable cities and communities’, 601-800 in ‘industry, innovation, and infrastructure’, and 1,001-1,500 in ‘partnerships for the goals’.
WE WILL WORK TO DEVELOP EVEN FURTHER
IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu stated that they continuously increase their success momentum and will work tirelessly to develop this further. Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu said, “Universities included in the ranking announced by Times Higher Education are recognized for their inclusive impacts on various dimensions of sustainable development. They carry out significant work for a sustainable and resilient future. Being ranked high in such an important and reputable list is a source of pride and happiness for us. Our academic staff with international experience, our campus where eight languages are spoken, our technology-based advanced education system offered to students, and the strong communication we established with the business world thanks to the support of the Izmir Chamber of Commerce were decisive factors in getting our University into the list.”
AN IMPORTANT INDICATOR
Pointing out that the increase in the number of scientific projects and international publications is one of the clearest indicators of the improvement in education quality, Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu said, “The volume of scientific output and the quality of research at our University continue to increase every year. In 2022, the number of scientific publications affiliated with our University was 290, while in 2023, this number reached 305. Between 2001 and 2023, the total number of affiliated scientific publications at our University was 2 thousand 677. 22.2% of this occurred in the last two years. The number of citations to scientific publications in 2022 was 6 thousand 185, while this number rose to 7 thousand 1 in 2023. The number of citations is an important indicator of the quality of scientific publications and the recognition they receive in the scientific community.”
BASED ON SOLID FOUNDATIONS
Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu concluded his remarks by saying, “Between 2001 and 2023, the total number of citations to IUE affiliated scientific publications was 36 thousand 230. The number of citations received in the last three years, that is 18 thousand 342, exceeds the total from the previous 20 years. The total number of projects conducted in 2022 reached 122 by 2023. All these figures clearly demonstrate our development in recent years. The project and scientific output are tangible indicators of educational quality. We see that the success we achieved in the list announced by Times Higher Education is based on solid foundations.”
