INTERNATIONAL AWARD FOR DESIGN FOR CHILDREN
Izmir University of Economics graduates return from overseas competitions with awards. Eda Kale, Graduate of Department of Architecture, and Can Aviral, Graduate of Department of Visual Communication Design, of Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) have been granted Mention Award at the Competition 2018 A House For ..., a competition which is organized by opengap.net, an international architectural network housed in Spain.
Kale, who is a graduate student of “Sustainable Architecture and Landscape Design” program at the Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy), and Aviral, who completed his graduate studies at “Color Design & Technology" program of the same university, designed a living space for children in the 1800’s in England who were chimney sweeps. Kale stated that the theme of the competition attracted their attention a lot and they created home design for the chimney sweeps by using their imagination.
All the education and training they received so far guided them a lot, stated Kale and she said, “At Izmir University of Economics, we received education from academicians who are experts in different fields and disciplines. The competition required creating a design for people who lived in any era of the history. Therefore, we chose children who were working as chimney sweeps in the 1800’s under harsh conditions. Our project proposal was an alternative home for them. We imagined a secret tunnel system for children in the walls, under the stairs, and between the water tanks of the houses they were cleaning. In our project, we wanted these children to create a happy home environment for themselves, where they slide down the chute under the stairs, play shadow games with a light coming from the crack in the wall. Being granted this award made us very happy and proud on behalf of our country.”
