The American Corners concept was developed by the Bureau of International Information Programs of the U.S. Department of State, with the purpose of providing access to the relevant information sources about American culture, history and educational system. American corners have been set up in chambers of commerce, or in public libraries.
Following the opening of the first American Corner in Russia, Turkey has been the second country in the world where American Corners were established. Today, around 300 American Corners have been set up in many countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America. There are currently four American Corners in Turkey: Izmir, Bursa, Kayseri and Erzurum.
The Izmir American Corner, which has been set up in our university library, aims to provide information on the US culture and educational system to our own students, and to the public of Izmir and surrounding regions.
